almost는 부사 이고 nealy와 비슷한 의미 (거의) 를 가지고 있습니다. 

예) I almost failed the exam. (but I didn't fail)

가끔 사람들이 almost all을 헷갈려 하는데

사실 almost all은 그냥 단순히 almost (nearly) + all 의 의미입니다.

I know almost everyone here. 라고 하는 것은 

I know almost all the people here. (nearly all the people) 와 같습니다.

Almost everything was destroyed. 라고 하는 것은

Almost all of the town was destroyed. (nearly all of the town) 와 같습니다. 

most 

most 는 형용사 또는 대명사이고 majority와 비슷한 의미를 가지고 있습니다. 

most가 형용사로 쓰일 때 (대부분의)

most가 대명사 쓰일 때 (대다수)

예) Most of my friends can speak English.

Allay vs Alley vs Ally

allay (동사): (특히 감정을) 가라 앉히다, 완화하다

"Allay" is a verb meaning to reduce the intensity, lay to rest, or pacify and calm. 

예) His mother attempted to allay his fears.

alley (명사): 골목, 오솔길 (복수: alleys)

"Alley" is a noun meaning a narrow passageway. 

예) There is an alley behind the buildings.

ally (동사; 명사): 동맹을 맺다; 동맹 (복수: allies)

"Ally" is a verb or noun meaning to connect by some relationship usually showing helpfulness or kinship.

agree with vs agree on vs agree to 

agree with

누구누구 의 의견에 동의하다, 어떤것에 대해 동의하다.

Ageing vs Aging

북미지역 American과 Canadian 들은 aging (American English)을 주로 사용하고 

British와 Autralian을 포함하는 북미 외 지역에서는 Ageing (British English)을 사용합니다. 

아래 예에서 볼 수 있듯이 American, Canadian 주요 언론 매체들은 aging 이라는 스펠링을 선호합니다. 

예) We need promotional campaigns to make aging seem more appealing to young people. [Los Angeles Times]

예) Moncton officials say the city’s underground maze of aging water pipes were a factor in this week’s water main break that forced a boil order on roughly 30,000 residents. [CBC]

Affect vs Effect

일상 생활에서 보통 affect 는 보통 동사로 사용됩니다. 

affect는 동사로 ~에 영향을 미치다 라는 뜻이 있죠. 

예) Heavy drinking will affect your liver. (과음은 당신의 간에 영향을 줍니다.)

예) Does television affect children’s behaviour? (텔레비전이 아동들의 행동에 영향을 미치는가?)

일상 생활에서 보통 effect는 명사로 사용됩니다. 

effect는 명사로 영향, 결과, 효과 등의 뜻이 있죠. 

예) the beneficial effects of exercise (운동의 유익한 효과)

예) Does television have an effect on children’s behaviour? (텔레비전이 아동들의 행동에 영향을 미치는가?)

이제 헷갈리는 것이 effect 가 동사로 사용될 떄 인데요, 

쓰이는 빈도가 상당히 낮고 격식적인 표현이지만 (not common, technical word)

이때 effect는 동사로 "to bring about", 즉 (어떤 결과를) 가져오다 라는 뜻이 있습니다.

Adviser vs Advisor

조언자의 의미를 지닌 단어는 adviser, advisor 둘 중 어떤 것이 맞을까요?

정답은 둘 다 입니다. 하지만 미묘한 차이점이 존재하는데 한번 알아보도록 하죠.

보통 adviser는 British English에서 널리 쓰이고 advisor는 American English 에서 널리쓰인다? 

라고 잘못 알려져 있는 경우가 많은데 이것은 틀린 내용 입니다.

진실은: British English와 American English에서 모두 adviser가 advisor 보다 더 많이 사용된다 입니다. 

단지, British English 에서는 adviser가 advisor 보다 확실하게 선호되는 스펠링인 반면

American English 에서는 adviser가 advisor 보다 아주 미미하게 더 많이 사용됩니다

한가지 특이한 점은 북미 지역에서 official job title (직업, 직함) 등을 말할때 advisor 라는 단어를 많이 사용한다는 점입니다. 

명함 같은 것을 보면 "financial advisor" 나 "academic advisor" 처럼 advisor로 적혀 있는 경우가 많은데

이것은 직함 등에서 adviser 를 사용하는 것이 덜 격식적인 것으로 느껴지고 (seen as less formal)

advisor 라고 사용하는 것이 advice 를 생계수단, 직업으로 하는 사람 (who gives advice for a living)이라는 뉘양스를 주기 때문입니다. 

참고) 대부분의 사전에는 adviser가 주된 스펠링 (primary spelling) 으로 수록되어 있습니다. 

참고) 통계적으로도 영어를 사용하는 국가들의 뉴스, 미디어에서 adviser 가 advisor 보다 약 5배 가량 더 많이 사용됩니다.

Adverse vs Averse 

Adverse와 Averse는 서로 다른 단어이지만

스펠링이 비슷하고 단어의 뜻도 둘다 부정적인(negative)한 의미를 가지고 있어 

시험에도 혼용어 혼동어 등으로 자주 나오는 단어 입니다.

이번 기회에 확실히 그 차이점을 알아두세요.

Adverse ( = unfavourable) : 형용사 [주로 명사 앞에 씀]

뜻: 좋지 못한, 부정적인, 불리한

Averse ( = opposed ) : 형용사[명사 앞에는 안 씀]

뜻: 반대하는, 싫어하는

Averse는 명사 앞에는 쓰이지 않고 주로

not averse to 명사 (~을 반대하지 않는) 의 형태나

be averse to 명사 (~을 반대하는)의 형태로 사용됩니다. 

예) I mentioned it to Kate and she wasn't averse to the idea. 내가 케이트에게 그 생각을 말해 봤는데 그녀도 싫어하지 않았어.

예) He was averse to any change. 그는 어떤 변화도 반대했다.

Adapter vs Adaptor

전통적인 영어에서는 이 두 가지 단어를 구분지어 사용했습니다. 

-er이 붙는 adapter 는 개작자, 번안자, 각색자, 편곡자의 뜻을 가진 사람을 의미했고

-or이 붙는 adaptor 는 전기 기기를 연결하는 어댑터를 의미했습니다. 

하지만 현대 영어에서는 이 둘의 구분이 모호해졌고 사전에서도 이 둘을 동의어로 분류하고 있습니다. 

따라서 이 둘중 아무거나 사용하여도 상관 없습니다. 다만 글쓰기 등을 할 때는 둘중 하나만을 사용하는 일관성을 보여주세요.

Acknowledgement vs Acknowledgment

의 뜻을 가진 단어는 acknowledgement 와 acknowledgment. 이 둘은 모두 옳은 스펠링이며 둘 다 사용할 수 있습니다.

따라서 둘 다 사용해도 되지만 글을 쓸때는 둘 중 한가지만 사용하는 일관성을 보여주세요.

Accommodation vs Accomodation
